Spot on, Jacqueline. The way I think of it is, rather than praise the child and the achievement, talk about the character traits that help them reach their goals — whether they are academic, physical, social, etc. Attributes such as effort, positive attitude, determination, persistence, compassion, humor, and so on. These are inner qualities that they can call upon, that can never be taken away from them. This is where self-worth is born.
